Achieve a More Vibrant Smile through Teeth Whitening
Whether you have an upcoming wedding or reunion, or would like to brighten your smile over the course of a few weeks, professional teeth whitening can deliver amazing results. At Nordhus Dentistry, we offer several options for teeth whitening, including in-office and at-home options, that can fit both your lifestyle and budget. For a subtle change or a more dramatic effect, a teeth whitening treatment coordinated through our team in Wichita, KS, can deliver the superb, vibrant smile you want.
What Causes Dental Stains?
Dental stains are a common problem among teens and adults. Even with diligent dental care, stains can be impossible to remove, and often impossible to ignore. There are two kinds of dental stains: extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic stains are the brown or yellow discolorations that appear on the surface of your teeth, often caused by tobacco, tea, coffee, wine, and dark foods.
Intrinsic stains are more gray in color, or can appear as white spots. These stains occur deeper, affecting the underlying tooth layers. Typically, teeth whitening only effectively treats extrinsic stains, but the KöR® system we offer can help eliminate both types of stains.
Whitening Your Teeth at Nordhus Dentistry
Dr. Nordhus can perform in-office teeth whitening during a 90-minute session. Patients can experience a smile up to eight shades brighter, in just a single appointment. During your treatment session, we will place a barrier on your gums, which will protect them from the strength of the gel. Next, we will apply the potent, safe gel to your dental enamel. The peroxide in the gel lifts stains from teeth, eliminating the dark stains from their surfaces.
Undergoing a supervised, in-office whitening treatment can alleviate sensitivity issues and gum irritation, since Dr. Nordhus can adjust the potency levels.
We use the KöR® deep bleaching system, which incorporates in-office treatment with at-home whitening to eliminate the darkest, deepest stains. However, some teeth stains may not respond, such as the white, horizontal lines known as fluorosis, and the stains caused by taking tetracycline antibiotics. Intrinsic stains may require an alternate cosmetic procedure, such as porcelain veneers.
Whitening Your Teeth at Home
If you would like to whiten you teeth in the comfort of your own home, at-home teeth whitening could benefit you most. During your consultation, Dr. Nordhus will review your at-home options with you, including customized bleaching trays, paint-on whitening treatment, whitening strips, toothpaste, and mouthwash.
If you choose customized bleaching trays, Dr. Nordhus will take an impression of your teeth. From the impression, fitted trays will be fabricated, that you can take home. We will provide you with a powerful bleaching gel, along with instructions on how to load your trays, how long to wear them, and how to care for them.
Most patients complete a daily treatment of about one hour, for up to 14 days, for optimal results. We recommend that you retain your trays to use for future touch-ups.
Benefits of Supervised Treatment
Dentist-supervised sessions are a very safe and effective way to brighten your smile. Over-the-counter whitening products available online or through drug stores may be tempting, since they are more cost-effective. However, they do not offer the potency and whitening power of professional, dentist-supervised treatment.
The level of active ingredient in the teeth whitening products available at Nordhus Dentistry is only available through a dentist’s office. In addition, if you suffer from tooth sensitivity, undergoing supervised whitening treatment can alleviate sensitivity issues and gum irritation, especially an in-office treatment, since Dr. Nordhus can adjust the potency levels.
