Nordhus Dentistry was highly recommended to me by our daughter. Must say, after visiting that I see why!! My initial dental evaluation was most thorough, detecting several dental problems that I had been unaware of. A+ grade for friendliness to professional for staff.

Wow! What a great experience. I really felt like they cared about my oral health, I wasn't just another mouth full of teeth. I never had such a thorough exam. I was not pushed into any treatment. No high pressure at all. Every one was so personable. You were able to tell that they all enjoyed their job. Thanks everyone.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Implants?

You may be wondering why you should consider dental implants when traditional dental restorations like bridges and dentures are far more affordable. While it is true that traditional dental restorations offer lower upfront costs, implants are the best option available to restore your smile after losing a tooth. The long-term benefits of dental implants from our Wichita dentist office include:

Unmatched Results

A traditional dental restoration such as a bridge for a missing tooth or a denture may fill the visible gap in your smile, but unlike natural teeth, it lacks any structure below the gum line. Dental implants are made up of three distinct components: post, abutment, and restoration. The interconnected parts replace the entire tooth structure, providing incredible stability and natural-feeling results.

Long-Term Solution

While the restoration placed on top of an implant will eventually need replacement, a dental implant fuses with your jawbone just like the roots of a tooth. A dental implant not only supports your health and oral function but can provide a lifetime of reliable service.

Improved Oral and Overall Health

When you lose a tooth, the bone tissue in your jaw begins to deteriorate. Dental implants are the only treatment that effectively stops this jaw bone atrophy, which in turn supports your overall well-being.

Dental Implant Timeline

Since dental implants require an individualized treatment plan, the timeline may differ for each patient. General steps include:

"We create 3-D digital x-rays using our i-CAT® machine for incredibly precise implant placement."
"We create 3-D digital x-rays using our i-CAT® machine for incredibly precise implant placement."

Initial Consultation

At your initial consultation, our dentist will conduct a thorough examination of your teeth, gums, and facial bone structure and review your medical and dental history. This allows Dr. Nordhus to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants. He will then create a unique treatment plan to meet your needs and provide you with your specific estimated timeline.

Preparatory Procedures

In some cases, patients at our Wichita office will need to undergo preparatory surgical treatments to restore their eligibility for dental implants. Patients who have been living with missing teeth for a considerable amount of time will likely have experienced significant bone loss. In such cases, bone grafting or sinus lift surgery may be required before moving forward with implant placement surgery.

Implant Surgery

Implant surgery does not take long and is usually completed in a single appointment. Most patients require only local anesthesia when undergoing dental implant placement, but we can select a sedation method if you feel especially anxious. During surgery, Dr. Nordhus will make an incision in the gums and create a pilot hole in the jaw. The threaded implant will be inserted, and the gums will be stitched closed over the implant.

Following surgery, the implant will require a period of four to six months to fuse with the jawbone in a process known as osseointegration. This period is critical to a successful outcome, as new bone tissue must grow in the small grooves around the implant in order to provide a solid foundation for your restoration. Following the osseointegration process, the implant post will become a part of your jawbone and will act just like a natural tooth root.

Abutment Placement

Once Dr. Nordhus has verified that your dental implant can provide a suitable foundation for your artificial teeth, an abutment will be attached to the top of the titanium post. This abutment will securely connect the fused dental implant to your permanent crown, bridge, or denture. After this procedure, your gum tissue will need time to heal around the abutment, which usually takes two to four weeks.

Permanent Restoration

As the final step, a crown, bridge, or implant-supported denture will be attached to the abutments on top of your dental implants. Dr. Nordhus strives to provide the best possible results to our patients and will never settle for "good enough." He will work with you to ensure that your new restoration fits comfortably and provides you with a beautiful, natural-looking smile.
