Advanced Cavity Detection with DIAGNOdent®
How DIAGNOdent® Provides Cavity Protection
In the past, dentists have relied on visual inspection to determine if teeth were showing any signs of decay. With the advent of DIAGNOdent® technology, practitioners are now able to detect dental caries (tooth decay) earlier in their development. Caries typically develop in between teeth or in grooves of the chewing surfaces, making them difficult to detect. Decay can spread into the area beneath the tooth enamel and eventually develop into a cavity.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
The DIAGNOdent® system uses laser technology to detect caries in their earliest stages. During your routine checkup, we will first clean your teeth thoroughly to obtain the most accurate readings. The small, portable DIAGNOdent® machine has a handheld tool that emits a fluorescent light. As the wand is moved throughout the mouth, the machine monitors the way that each tooth reacts. Healthy teeth exhibit little to no florescence, or glow, while areas of decay will emit a greater degree of florescence. The DIAGNOdent® system has an audio signal that alerts Dr. Nordhus to changes in the quantity of florescence that is detected.
Treating Areas of Decay
If decay is detected, Dr. Nordhus can make precise recommendations based on the degree of damage. If the decay is caught early on in the development process, he may recommend simply monitoring the area. Dr. Nordhus will also commonly recommend preventive treatments, such as fluoride and sealants, to protect teeth that have sustained a moderate amount of damage. If the decay is more advanced, your teeth may require restorative treatment, such as a dental filling.
The Benefits of Using the DIAGNOdent® System
The DIAGNOdent® system offers an effective, painless technique for early cavity detection. The handheld tool can be directly applied to fine crevices in the teeth where caries originate. Additionally, patients are able to avoid x-ray exposure while still receiving thorough preventive care and monitoring any areas of decay on their teeth.
