What Can Porcelain Veneers Treat?
Veneers are specifically designed to conceal a variety of minor cosmetic imperfections, including:
- Uneven spacing
- Misshapen Teeth
- Minor Misalignment
While porcelain veneers are a top-of-the-line cosmetic solution, they are not suitable for all patients. In some cases, another procedure may be more appropriate. For instance, if you suffer from extensive misalignment, the doctor may recommend Invisalign® to directly straighten your smile.
Are You a Candidate?
Porcelain veneers candidates should be in good oral health. During an initial exam, Dr. Nordhus will evaluate your teeth and gums. If you have any issues such as cavities or gingivitis, these should be addressed before moving ahead with veneers or any other cosmetic dental procedure. Dr. Nordhus provides comprehensive dental care and can treat any present conditions to restore your oral health and your candidacy for veneers.
With proper care, porcelain veneers can last more than 10 or even 20 years.
Benefits of Porcelain Veneers
The most obvious benefit of receiving porcelain veneers is the ability to dramatically transform your smile. However, there are several additional advantages to this treatment, including:
- While other cosmetic treatments, such as teeth whitening, can treat a single specific concern, porcelain veneers can address multiple issues with a single procedure.
- High-Quality Materials
- The modern materials used for porcelain veneers are not only strong but especially life-like, reflecting light similarly to your enamel. Additionally, porcelain is not porous so it is highly stain resistant, allowing your smile to remain bright.
- Improved Self-Confidence
- By dramatically improving their smile, many patients experience a significant boost in self-confidence which often translates to a higher overall quality of life.
Typically, the porcelain veneer process requires two appointments including several steps:
Preparing Your Teeth
Once you have decided porcelain veneers are right for you, Dr. Nordhus will begin your treatment by preparing your teeth. This involves removing a small layer of enamel to make room for the veneer. The amount is usually equal in thickness to an eggshell or about .5 to .7 mm. Typically, patients experience minimal discomfort, requiring only local anesthesia. However, we also offer oral sedatives and IV (intravenous) sedation if you are anxious about the treatment or suffer from dental phobia.
If your teeth are especially sensitive after the etching process, we recommend that you avoid hard, crunchy foods and very hot or cold foods and beverages.
Designing & Fabricating Your Veneers
After your teeth have been prepared, Dr. Nordhus will use our iTero™ intraoral scanner to take digital, 3-D images of your teeth to ensure your veneers will fit properly. This tool allows for exceptional precision and makes your treatment experience more comfortable.
Our off-site laboratory will then use these highly detailed digital impressions to craft your veneers to match the shape and size of your natural teeth. This process usually takes about three weeks. In the meantime, we can provide temporary veneers for you to wear.
Placing Your Veneers
Once your customized veneers are ready, you will return to our office. Dr. Nordhus will ensure that your veneers fit comfortably and achieve the desired results. He will then adhere the veneers to your teeth with a special dental cement, and secure the bond with a curing light. During every step of your treatment, Dr. Nordhus will use detail-oriented techniques to ensure exceptional results you can feel confident in.

Some patients choose to make porcelain veneers part of a smile makeover plan. In other cases, patients may choose to undergo teeth whitening or laser gum reshaping before receiving veneers in order to achieve a more comprehensive cosmetic enhancement. You will have an opportunity to fully explain your goals to Dr. Nordhus during your initial consultation, and he can recommend complementary treatments to help you achieve your ideal smile.
Caring for Your Veneers
With proper care, porcelain veneers can last more than 10, or even 20 years. To help prolong the life of your veneers, it is recommended that you:
- Maintain proper oral hygiene
- Avoid chewing on hard items such as pens or your nails
- Attend regular dental exams so your doctor can monitor the state of your veneers
- Protect your smile when playing sports by wearing a mouth guard
- Seek treatment for bruxism or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder to prevent damage to your veneers
If you have any questions about maintaining your veneers, we are always happy to provide you with more information.
Financing Is Available
Porcelain veneers are one of the more costly cosmetic procedures and are not covered by insurance. However, they can provide exceptional results. The cost of your porcelain veneers will depend on several factors, including whether you receive traditional or prep-less treatment. To help ensure you can afford the highest-quality cosmetic care, we accept CareCredit® financing which offers a variety of monthly payment plans.
